Overview

Acupuncture originated in China more than 5000 years ago. It is an entire system of health and healing predicated on the concept that energy or the vital life force (Qi or chi) flows throughout the body through twelve major energy pathways or meridians.

Each pathway courses through specific organs and tissues and is named accordingly.

The philosophy of acupuncture is based on the concept that disease emanates from troublesome-excessive or inadequate-energy flow through a meridian causing disease and/or dysfunction of organs and tissues along that meridian.

Treatment Overview

Treatment involves inserting thin acupuncture needles into particular points along a meridian, thereby normalizing the energy flow to the diseased or dysfunctional organs/tissues along that meridian and healing the problem areas.

Pre-treatment diagnosis includes checking the tongue and face, the pulse in the radial or wrist area, and taking a thorough history of the patient's illness. This determines where acupuncture needles, usually about a dozen at a time, will be placed.
