Overview

An asthma "attack" is a sudden impairment of breathing and oxygen exchange due to narrowing of the bronchial passage and/or thickening of mucous in the bronchi.

Many factors can trigger an asthma attack including smoke, pollen, air pollution, mold, dust or an allergic reaction to certain foods such as wheat, milk and eggs. Chemical additives such as food colorings and preservatives or cold air and exercise can also precipitate an asthma attack.

Asthma is most commonly developed in children up to age 17.

Asthma that starts in infancy is usually caused by food allergies. From ages 10-30, the cause is usually airborne particles. Asthma that begins during midlife is usually due to infections.

Natural Treatment

For many patients natural treatments of asthma are effective and can produce fewer and less severe side effects than do traditional methods. Traditional allopathic treatment usually involves taking a corticosteroid, which has many side effects ranging from muscle weakness and adreanal shut down to ulcers, dizziness and glaucoma.

Herbal therapies include ephedra (natural form), a bronchodiatator, mullein tea to sooth mucous membranes, slippery elm to decrease mucous, green tea, garlic and licorice root.

Asthmatics may also respond favorably to changes in the diet and nutrition. These changes include elimination of allergies (see AET)-which improves digestion-and increasing essential fatty acids (EFAs) such as Omega 3+6.

Eliminating the ingestion of food dyes, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and food preservatives is also helpful.

Specific nutrients that help asthma include C, B6, B12, magnesium chloride, and calcium glycerophosphate. In the case of acute attacks, intravenous administration of such nutrients works quicker and more effectively.

Two tablespoons of olive oil daily can help prevent or minimize attacks.

Chiropractic adjustment and acupuncture have shown success at eliminating asthma.

Saunas taken with the head outside the sauna and hot baths are also recommended.
