Key Benefits

  • Used to treat headaches, vision problems, TMJ, orthodontic and overall structural issues.
  • Can relieve dizziness, tinnitis (ringing in ears) and, occasionally, abnormal blood pressure.
  • Helps normalize head and facial development, hyperactivity, irritability and relieving ear infections in children.
Overview

To understand what craniosacral therapy is, it helps to have a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the meninges (a.k.a. dura) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

The brain and spinal cord are protected by the bony cranium and vertebral column. Under the skeletal covering, surrounding the brain and cord, is the meningal covering or dura-a membrane enclosing the central nervous system, which contains a fluid bathing the brain and cord. This fluid provides nutrition, waste removal, shock absorption and a medium for neurotransmitters.

The brain intermittently produces cerebrospinal fluid, which expands the meningeal covering like a balloon filling with water. The cranium also expands when the meningeal lining is filled; many bones composing the cranium have flexible joints called suture joints, which allow for expansion and contraction. When this movement is compromised it leads to pinched nerves, compromised blood flow and nervous system dysfunction due to CSF congestion. A trained practitioner of cranial therapy or osteoplasty can monitor for symmetry and fullness of this movement.

At the bottom of the spine is the sacrum, which has a characteristic movement that must be synchronous with cranial movement. If the sacrum and cranium are not free to move together, they will adversely affect each other and the spine. Impingements, restrictions or trauma anywhere within the cranial-sacral system affect the rest of the system. Subsequently, the entire central nervous system is compromised.

Treatment

Craniosacral therapy involves gentle manipulation of the cranium and/or sacrum, which frees up restriction of the bones and sutures and vanquishes abnormal stress in the meningeal lining.

Who Benefits?

People suffering from chronic headaches, vision problems, TMJ, orthodontic problems, overall structural issues, tinnitis, or dizziness have benefited greatly from cranial sacral therapy.
