Internal medicine is a medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of adults. Doctors of internal medicine, also known as internists, have extensive experience treating and diagnosing multiple areas of diseases and symptoms within the body, and can have specialties in the areas of cardiology (heart), endocrinology (hormone disorders), hematology (blood disorders), infectious diseases, gastroenterology (diseases of the gut), nephrology (kidney diseases), oncology (cancer), pulmonology (lung disorders), and rheumatology (arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders).
Shaw Jones, MD, is the internal medicine doctor at Natural Horizons. Through his integrative treatment approach, he utilizes both conventional and natural medicine therapies when working with his patients.

- What is the immune system?
The body’s immune system, often called our “defense system,” is designed to ward off and eliminate “invaders” such as toxins, bacteria, fungus, viruses, parasites, microbes and pathogens of all kinds. The immune system works at different levels to find “invaders,” and provide immediate response or memory for future response.
In order to do an effective job of defending our bodies, the immune system must be healthy. To keep the immune system in top fighting condition, we need to provide it with the proper nutrition and supplementation, fortifying it with vitamins, minerals and amino acids. We must also detoxify our bodies to minimize toxins, wastes and heavy metals, which weaken and overburden the immune system. It is also important to minimize overall stress in our lives, as well as eliminating specific major issues of stress as they occur (bad relationships, unhappiness in a job, etc.). Stress, be it physical or emotional, weakens our immune system and contributes to illness. Eventually, this leads to a high susceptibility to illness. Decreasing stress in our lives lessens our chances of becoming ill.
If we do what is necessary to make our immune system as healthy as possible, and maintain a good balance in our daily lives, our immune system will function at peak operating condition for our given genetic potential and render our bodies better able to avert most disease.
- What is integrative medicine?
Integrative medicine combines or “integrates” the best that allopathic or conventional medicine has to offer, with the best that alternative disciplines have to offer, all directed at the identification of the “source” of illness or disease, and the resultant treatment of it. Integrative medicine focuses on treating the cause of a disorder as opposed to just treating the symptoms.
