Check out the Natural Horizons website for all of our new video testimonials! "I started to have health problems like nine years ago after I have my baby. And I was diagnosed with asthma, so I was treated with, since the beginning, with Prednisone, Albuterol and antibiotics. That’s when I looked for a doctor and I found Dr. Bennett. I love the way that she did the medical history. She investigated the cause, which is what unfortunately most MD’s don’t do." - Maria M., Naturopathic patient

Naturopathic Medicine at NHWC By Lucky Bennett, ND
Naturopathic Medicine is a unique approach to health and wellness that is based on six governing principles:
- First, do no harm. Naturopathic medicine utilizes gentle, low-risk therapies such as diet, herbs, homeopathy, lifestyle modification, and nutritional supplementation.
- Find the cause. Unless the underlying cause of an illness is identified and addressed, that condition will persist.
- The innate ability of the body to heal itself. Naturopathic medicine recognizes the body’s ability to heal, and provides appropriate support with natural substances to enhance that process.
- Prevention. Eating and living healthfully are the keys to disease prevention. Naturopathic medicine assesses these areas and addresses issues that may need improvement.
- Education. Rather than simply telling people to change their eating habits or take an herb, the Naturopathic doctor seeks to educate and empower her patients to take responsibility for their own health, so that they have the tools to make healthy choices on a daily basis.
- Treat the whole person. Rather than seeing people as a collection of symptoms, Naturopathic medicine recognizes the interplay between the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of people’s lives. When one, or more, of these are out of balance, the other areas will inevitably be impacted.
My goal is to teach people to be as healthy as possible so they have the energy and vitality to live their lives. One of the most exciting aspects of naturopathic care is the ability to take time with each client to get to know his or her personal story, particularly as it relates to his or her current health. This allows us to explore areas of people’s lives that may be out of balance and impacting their health negatively. By discussing diet, sleep habits, exercise habits, social support, habits, and stress management, I create individualized plans to help each of my clients work towards their optimal health. What we eat has a profound impact on our health, or lack thereof, and is an area over which we have a tremendous amount of control. While I work to teach people how to eat a diet that will allow them to maintain their health and engage in healthy lifestyle habits, I use herbs and homeopathy to support them in the interim. In addition to being effective, for the most part, these substances are gentle and carry a low risk of adverse effects. When the body has the best tools possible to function well, people go from surviving in their daily lives to thriving. I enjoy working with people in all stages of life. MyAreas of focus include allergies, digestive complaints, women’s health, and detoxification. Colon Hydrotherapy
The colon, as the large intestine is known, is the end portion of the human digestive tract. Approximately 5 feet long and 2 inches in diameter; its major function is to eliminate waste from the body. Beneficial bacteria living in the healthy colon synthesize valuable nutrients such as vitamins 'K' and portions of the 'B' complex. However, the average person, may have 10 to 25 pounds of dried fecal matter in their colon! The toxins generated from accumulating such quantities of waste matter are responsible for many body imbalances and, in the end, disease. If you suffer from any of these problems: constipation, digestive distress, gas & bloating, skin disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, candida (yeast infections), allergies, muscle/joint pain, arthritis, hypertension, fibromyalgia, headaches, chronic skin problems, abdominal gas and bloating, or low energy ... then you may need to cleanse your body's elimination system. Colon Hydrotherapy (a.k.a. a colonic) is an effective method to help you reach this goal. It involves the safe, gentle infusion of water into the colon via the rectum. No chemicals or drugs are involved and the entire therapy is both relaxing and effective. During therapy the client lies on a custom treatment table in complete comfort. Colonics cleanse the colon, restore its efficiency in the removal of waste material, allow it to resume its original shape; essentially revitalizing one of your basic body functions. To schedule a colon hydrotherapy treatment with Teresa Owens, certified colon hydrotherapist, call Natural Horizons at 703-246-9355.

Salmon with Ginger Glaze Serves 6 Ingredients: 6 salmon fillet (5-6 ounces each); 1/3 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce; 1/3 cup honey; 2 tablespoons peeled and grated fresh ginger; 2 cloves garlic, peeled, pressed Directions: Place the salmon in a glass or ceramic baking dish large enough to hold it. In a glass measuring cup, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, ginger and garlic. Reserve a couple of tablespoons to brush on the cooked salmon. Pour the remaining mixture over the salmon, lifting it up with a fork so that the marinade can run underneath. (If you have time, cover the dish with plastic wrap and marinate 2 hours. Otherwise, set it aside while the oven heats.) Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Uncover the salmon and bake it until the soy sauce mixture forms a glaze and the fish begins to flake around the edges, about 18 minutes. If the fillet is thicker in the center, the center will cook less. Brush with reserved glaze if desired and serve hot or cold.
