Despite how much is spent on healthcare in the U.S., our population's state of health is poor. And it's getting worse. Much of this can be attributed to an environment that continues to get more toxic, increased stress in our daily lives and an abundance of processed food that is filled with chemicals, empty calories, sugar, salt and fat.
Improving the body's function through basic dietary and lifestyle changes while decreasing the many stresses from the environment is critical to improving health. This is where nutrition and lifestyle services can help. Find out more about the nutrition and lifestyle services at Natural Horizons Wellness Center:
- What is automatic response testing (A.R.T)?
Autonomic Response Testing is a way to access and find out the condition of the body by stressing the autonomic nervous system, which involves testing the strength of an isolated muscle, usually the shoulder (deltoid) muscle. A stressor of the body or a particular organ, and the muscle’s response to it, enables the tester to assess the health status of the tissue. ART can tell us, for example, if the liver is not functioning well; why it is not functioning well; what therapy or product(s) can help it; and the progress of the therapy.
ART is a form of alernative diagnosis that is widely used by alternative practitioners but which has not been widely tested nor accepted by conventional medicine.
- What is colon hydrotherapy?
The two most toxic areas of the body are on both ends of the gastrointestinal system, the mouth and the colon. The colon collects a large amount of waste and harmful microbes, which, if not eliminated completely, will accumulate in the colon. Low-fiber diets usually lead to incomplete elimination. This accumulation is self-perpetuating, blocking normal flow of wastes out of the body, interfering with the absorption of nutrients, and producing toxins that are then absorbed into the rest of the body.
Colon hydrotherapy is an extremely effective technique that introduces clean water into the colon (large intestine) through the anus, and washes away accumulated wastes and deposits from the opening and the interior walls of the colon. The result is a toxin-free, normally functioning large intestine that will foster the growth of good bacteria (probiotics).
- How do I find out if I have allergies?
An allergic reaction is an abnormal reaction of the immune system resulting in many symptoms that can include a rash, hives, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, a runny nose, itchiness and diarrhea. It can also lead to chronic illness.
To determine if an allergy to a substance (allergen) exists, there are several tests that are recommended. A provocation test injects a potential allergen under the skin to see if a skin reaction (red welt) occurs. A positive test indicates an allergy to that particular substance. Another test combines a person’s blood serum with the potential allergen in a test tube. A cloudy reaction demonstrates an allergic reaction to that substance.
Finally, muscle testing (ART) may suggest possible allergies or sensitivities by a weakened muscle response, upon the body’s exposure to the substance in question. Determining allergies is important to direct one’s nutrition; to uncover an underlying cause of illness, to assist in detoxification and to direct therapy. Allergy elimination (AET) is a critical therapy in treating chronic illness.
- What is integrative medicine?
Integrative medicine combines or “integrates” the best that allopathic or conventional medicine has to offer, with the best that alternative disciplines have to offer, all directed at the identification of the “source” of illness or disease, and the resultant treatment of it. Integrative medicine focuses on treating the cause of a disorder as opposed to just treating the symptoms.
