Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy / Natural Hormone Therapy
Hormones are chemical messengers secreted by different glands or tissues to help coordinate physiology within the body.
When hormones are out of balance, it can result in a variety of health issues, including, but not limited to, cancer, PMS, aches and pains, accelerated aging, osteoporosis, and neurological problems. That which must be in balance include the hormones cortisol (stress hormone), estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, the thyroid and parathyroid hormones, and the pituitary gland-the master hormone gland that controls the other hormones.
Proper hormonal balance (amount, ratio, and timing of each hormone) is essential for a high level of health. Any number of stressors can throw off the balance and result in disease. Stressors include, but are not limited to, toxicity, emotional stress, pregnancy, infections, structural issues, vitamin and mineral imbalances and electrical energy imbalances.
The thyroid gland (in the neck), which controls our metabolism and the adrenal glands on top of the kidneys, must also be in balance with the other as each of these glands can then compensate for the other if one is functionally deficient. Much of our overall well being depends on the balance of the thyroid and adrenals.
- What is integrative medicine?
Integrative medicine combines or “integrates” the best that allopathic or conventional medicine has to offer, with the best that alternative disciplines have to offer, all directed at the identification of the “source” of illness or disease, and the resultant treatment of it. Integrative medicine focuses on treating the cause of a disorder as opposed to just treating the symptoms.
- What is Natural Horizons' approach to optimizing wellness?
In order to optimize one’s wellness, we examine all current habits and lifestyle choices. Once we have this information, in some cases, it will simply require balancing some of these things, while in others it requires major modifications in lifestyle. Areas we regularly address are:
• Work/Life Balance
• Stress Related Factors
• Psycho-Emotional Well Being
Optimizing wellness also requires identifying stresses or traumas (infections, toxins, emotional upsets, physical imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, etc.) and eliminating them so the body can heal itself.
- What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring all recent medical records, including lab work, test results, x-rays, scans, and any other information relevant to your condition.
If you have downloaded our Patient Intake Form, or received it by mail, please fill it out completely and bring it with you to your first appointment.
If you have not received the Patient Intake Form, please arrive approximately 20 minutes prior to your appointment, so that you will have ample time to fill it out prior to seeing your doctor.
- What should I expect at my first appointment?
In most cases, one doctor will perform your initial intake. After the doctor has seen you, he/she may refer you to another doctor for additional intake and/or testing, or begin the therapy indicated by the diagnostic testing.
Your initial appointment should take between one and two hours. At the conclusion of your initial appointment, the doctor will devise a treatment plan and will go over it in detail with you.
- What conditions and illnesses do you treat?
This is a partial list of the health issues we treat:
• Alzheimer’s Disease

Testing & Treatment
Blood, urine and saliva are usually tested to determine which hormone level is abnormal and to what degree. When the level of a hormone is determined to be higher or lower than it should be, action can be taken to normalize that level and restore balance with the other hormones. This is critically important with the sex hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone as so much of who we are and how healthy we are depends on these hormones being in balance.
Once the levels and ratios have been determined, normalization of the levels and balance occurs by first removing causes of the imbalance (e.g. stress, toxicity, dietary deficiency) and then substituting natural hormones (as opposed to synthetic hormones from other species) where the patient is deficient. Hormone substitution can be administered orally or through absorption across the skin (transdermally).
Monitoring results through further lab tests or through symptomatology is also part of Natural Hormone Therapy.
Prime candidates would include adults undergoing uncomfortable levels of life or health stress, or who are not functioning as well as they could be (e.g. low libido or chronic fatigue).
It is important to normalize hormone levels as they determine so much of our physical and mental health.
