Sedation Dentistry

Key Benefits

Allows dental procedures to be completed while asleep-especially beneficial for people who fear dental work, fidget or gag a lot during dentistry, undergo extensive, invasive dentistry, or who must undergo large amounts of dental work at one time.

Overview

Patients are put into a light sleep where breathing and swallowing remain under their control while their dentistry is performed.

Medication is given prior to the dental procedure, and the patient slowly goes into a light sleep. This sedative state allows them to not feel the dentistry being performed or be conscious of the dental work. The medication also induces amnesia of the entire dental procedure.

Patient's vital signs, including the amount of oxygen in their blood, are monitored at all times. Patients are periodically aroused to go to the bathroom, but slip back into their light sleep upon return to the chair.

At the end of the procedure, the sedation effects are reversed and the person easily slips back into a fully awake state.

Who Benefits?

  • People who are highly fearful of or intolerant of dentistry performed in their mouths
  • Severe gaggers or people who can't sit still in the dentist chair
  • People who undergo large amounts of dental work at one time
