Thermography
Key Benefits
Thermographic assessment may detect:
- many diseases in their early stages without x-ray radiation.
- some breast cancers earlier than mammograms (thermography determines a potential problem that may become a cancer and further cancer tests are needed after a positive breast thermography.)
- a variety of hard-to-detect bodily dysfunctions and injuries.
Overview
Thermography is a radiation-free, disease-detection technique that utilizes a sensitive, infrared camera interfaced with a computer to analyze slight variations in body temperature and vascular changes. It produces a diagnostic image that the practitioner uses to detect a variety of problems. Using thermography is based on the concept that early-stage diseases create an inflammation (increased blood flow), which appears as a slightly warmer area (orange, red, or yellow) on the thermography image. If the tissue is degenerating, blood flow diminishes and the area reads colder (purple, brown or black). If an abnormality is detected on thermography further tests are required but early detection is much more valuable than an incorrect negative reading.
Thermographic assessment may detect many diseases and other dysfunctions of the body. It is particularly useful in detecting most breast cancers, abdominal, spinal or facial diseases, and injuries.
Who Benefits?
Anyone can benefit from thermographic reading, though it is primarily used for screening and assessing the middle-aged and elderly. It is most commonly used to detect breast cancer and other inflammatory diseases in women, years earlier than other diagnostic techniques are able, such as mammography. The value of thermography screening cannot be stressed strongly enough as an addition to mammogram. There is no clinical downside to thermography, such as radiation.
