Allows dental procedures to be completed while asleep-especially beneficial for people who fear dental work, fidget or gag a lot during dentistry, undergo extensive, invasive dentistry, or who must undergo large amounts of dental work at one time.
Find Out if Sedation Dentistry is Right for You
Sedation Dentistry Overview
Patients are put into a light sleep where breathing and swallowing remain under their control while their dentistry is performed.
Medication is given prior to the dental procedure, and the patient slowly goes into a light sleep. This sedative state allows them to not feel the dentistry being performed or be conscious of the dental work. The medication also induces amnesia of the entire dental procedure.
Patient's vital signs, including the amount of oxygen in their blood, are monitored at all times. Patients are periodically aroused to go to the bathroom, but slip back into their light sleep upon return to the chair.
At the end of the procedure, the sedation effects are reversed and the person easily slips back into a fully awake state.
- What is biologic dentistry?
Biologic Dentistry recognizes and deals with the intimate relationship between the oral cavity (the mouth) and the rest of the body. Many diseases can have their origin in the oral cavity or are exacerbated by factors in the mouth, such as: toxic dental materials (mercury, nickel, fluoride, aluminum, etc.); infections of the teeth, gums, jaw bone or tonsils; jaw or tooth imbalances; or electrical currents generated by metal restorations. By resolving such issues in the oral cavity, illnesses can be prevented, resolved or more responsive to treatment.
One researched and well-documented example is the connection between gum disease and heart disease. Unhealthy gums produce high levels of bacteria, which are then transported by the bloodstream to the heart. The bacteria can then infect and alter the inner lining of the blood vessels within the heart. This begins the deposition of calcium and cholesterol within the vessels, which can form a blockage in the blood vessels and result in a heart attack.
Who Benefits from Sleep Dentistry?
- People who are highly fearful of or intolerant of dentistry performed in their mouths
- Severe gaggers or people who can't sit still in the dentist chair
- People who undergo large amounts of dental work at one time
Conscious Sedation Dentistry at Natural Horizons Wellness Centers
For many people, going to the dentist can be quite a stressful experience, leading many to avoid it altogether. With conscious sedation dentistry or "sleep dentistry" from Natural Horizons Wellness Centers (NHWC), that doesn’t have to be the case, and you can maintain your oral health without the anxiety or pain so often associated with dental work.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Perfect for those whose anxiety or strong gag reflex makes dental work impractical, and those who require extensive work, conscious sedation dentistry involves putting the patient into a light sleep for the entirety of a dental procedure. During this time, they remain in control of bodily functions like swallowing and breathing; however, they do not feel or notice the dental work being performed, nor do they have any recollection of it when awoken. Throughout the procedure, the patient’s vital signs are monitored, and in the case of long procedures, they are occasionally woken up so they can use the bathroom.
Why Choose Natural Horizons Wellness Centers?
At NHWC, we take a biological approach to dentistry. This means we focus on the patient as a whole rather than just the oral cavity and recognize the relationship between oral health and the rest of the body. Our dentists are trained to identify not only oral health issues, but also underlying conditions that may affect or be affected by them, such as with unhealthy gums and buildup in blood vessels. By effectively treating dental issues and becoming aware of their widespread impact on your body, you can help maintain better overall health in the long term.
Beyond Conscious Sedation Dentistry
In addition to our plethora of dental services, we offer holistic treatment for your mind and body. Our centers combine conventional and alternative medicines to provide a complete treatment plan for each of our patients – one that is tailored to perfectly match their individual needs.
