Low Intensity Laser Therapy for Dermatological Conditions

The use of lasers to treat dermatological conditions has been an industry standard for many years, particularly the use of high-powered lasers that are used in the operating room. Low intensity lasers have been slightly less known in the field of dermatology, and while they are not yet a common practice, they are gaining recognition in many parts of the world. Low Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT) is most commonly utilized for pain reduction, cell modulating cell function, and stimulating a faster healing process for skin tissue.

Conditions Treatable with LILT

There are a number of dermatological conditions that low intensity laser therapy can be used to treat. The most common skin conditions treated with this method are shingles (herpes zoster) and eczema, both stubborn skin ailments that cause many to turn to more extreme forms of treatment. Both have been found to show a significant improvement when treated with low intensity lasers.
These are not the only conditions that can be successfully treated using LILT. Psoriasis, acne, acne rosacea, genital herpes, arthritis, and gout have all shown positive responses to laser therapy. LILT is especially helpful for conditions that are permanent, such as herpes, and therefore have to be maintained.  Acne is usually only treated this way when various other treatment methods, such as creams, drugs and ointments, have failed.

How Low Intensity Laser Therapy Works

LILT works by utilizing new technology that uses laser diodes to target tissue that has been damaged. Specifically, it applies particles of energy called protons to stimulate molecules within a cell. There are a variety of ways that this assists in the healing process, including allowing for a quicker rate of recovery, and helping to eliminate pain. LILT does this all by using a simple low intensity laser of approximately 250 milliwatts, which produces a single color beam. This beam is applied to the area of the skin that has been affected, fixing the problem at its source.

Benefits of LILT

The benefits of low intensity laser therapy are significant. It a non-invasive procedure, can be safer than using topical products that are high in chemicals that can agitate the skin, and it is highly effective. Because it is an easy, low-cost alternative to other treatments, it has become and increasingly recommended therapy in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Not only does low intensity laser therapy eliminate the problem short term, it has also been found to have long term effects that keep issues from reoccurring and strengthens the integrity of the cells and tissue.  LILT can be used for anyone who has been unsuccessful in treating common skin problems with other methods.
