Spring & Allergy Season have arrived!

May 08, 2017

May - National Asthma & Allergy Month

Each year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) declares May to be "National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month." It's a peak season for asthma and allergy sufferers, and a perfect time to educate your patients, family, friends, co-workers and others about these diseases.

Many deaths due to asthma and allergies are preventable with proper treatment and care. About ten people die a day from asthma, it is becoming much more serious as each year passes. Asthma now affects more than 24.5 million people in America. Of this amount, more than 6 million of these people are children under the age of 18 that have asthma. The rate of allergies is climbing fast as well, more than 50 million people in America have been diagnosed with several types of allergies, including pollen, skin, latex, dust and more. It is important to spread awareness of these common, yet overlooked diseases.

Allergy Season

New Survey - Prepare before Allergy Season

A new online survey by the AAFA, finds that people spend little time thinking about their seasonal allergies until the start of allergy season, or symptoms are experienced. The survey included, 1,083 adults (ages 18-65) who have been diagnosed with seasonal allergies, and 534 parents of children (ages 5-17) with seasonal allergies. The result of the survey found that among respondents: “Close to two-in-three adults with seasonal allergies felt confident that they had an idea about the season in which their allergies would be the most severe, but over three-in-four reported that they thought most about managing their seasonal allergies only when they experienced symptoms or at the start of allergy season.”

With this new knowledge, doctors are encouraging patients that are aware they have seasonal allergies to begin preparing themselves prior to the season and/or experiencing symptoms. Allergy preparation is very important for those who are affected seasonally by allergies and especially those who have severe allergies. Thirty-eight percent of adults with seasonal allergies felt that their symptoms were becoming more severe.
