This Is What 20 Years Without Brushing Your Teeth Will Get You

August 31, 2017

It's crazy, but there are people out there who don't like to brush their teeth. Most find that the feeling of a good brush in the morning boosts the confidence and keeps the mouth from feeling, well, gunky, but to each their own, right?

Not so. Your dentist wasn't lying to you when they said brushing your teeth kept them healthy. It doesn't just prevents cavities, it stops buildup of tartar, food debris, bacteria, keeps your teeth from cracking and decaying and thousands of other things.

On a U.K. show called Embarrassing Bodies, a man named Jay showed the results of not brushing his teeth. Needless to say, he didn't have a sparkling smile.

Shot Confidence, Shot dreams

Because his teeth were so unseemly, he had zero confidence and it was hard to go outside.

But it wasn't just that. Jay felt ashamed because his dream was to be a physiotherapist. But how could he tell others how to take care of their bodies if he wasn't taking care of their own?

Brushing your teeth can be as good for your psychological health as your physical health. We brush our teeth and take showers because they make us feel good; but more than that, it's our signal to our bodies, our selves that we're looking out for ourselves.

Ultimately, you have to be your first, your best and your own ultimate ally. Brushing your teeth is as good a first step as any in that direction.

Don't Let it Happen to You

You don't have to avoid brushing for 20 years to have tooth problems pop up, either. Don't worry. It happens to the best of us.

But it's important to brush at least twice daily, though preferably after each meal. Make sure you get regular checkups with your dentist.
