What is Wellness?
If I were to ask 10 different people on the street to define wellness for me, I believe I would get at least 7 different definitions, if not 10.
Did you know that in some of their hotels, Marriott now offers a "wellness suite" complete with organic cotton bedding, aromatherapy dream sachets, and a healthy minibar? Or how about applying for the "wellness" program with the American Student Assistance's Association if you are having a difficult time making your student loan payments? If your dog's coat isn't quite as shiny as you would like it to be may I suggest "wellness" pet food supplements containing broccoli, cauliflower, kelp and garlic...yummy?
Too often wellness is associated primarily with physical health. It is confused with holistic health, disease prevention or health education. It is so much more than that. It is a choice to assume responsibility for the quality of your life. If you want to be wellyou will need to take responsibility in multiple areas of your life, such as, exercise and fitness, nutrition, stress management, critical thinking, purpose, spirituality, emotional maturity, humor, play, and effective, healthy relationships.
A Six-Point Model of Wellness
Take a moment and draw a picture of a tire on a piece of paper. Now divide that tire into six equal pie shaped divisions starting at the hub of the tire and extending to the outer edge. Label each one of these divisions with one of the following: Physical, Spiritual, Occupational, Emotional, Social, and Intellectual. This is the wellness model used by The National Wellness Institute to emphasize harmony, balance and interdependence between the major areas of your life.
Now draw a line from one side of each division to the other measuring how much responsibility you are taking in that specific area using the above paragraph's list of exercise, fitness, nutrition,....and effective healthy relationships as your guide.
Is your tire nice and round and balanced so it can take you on your life's journey or is it a little lopsided or have a couple of bulges on it?
