6 Proven Ways to Protect Your Child’s Teeth

See a Dentist

The ADA or American Dental Association recommends that children see their dentist on their first birthday. Early preventative care can lower costs at nearly 40% at the rate of a five-year period. The initial visit can help find and solve dental problems and help children get used to seeing a dentist at an early age.

Develop Good Habits

As a parent or guardian, it is crucial to brush or clean baby’s gums in the beginning using a washcloth or a baby toothbrush. When the baby’s teeth start appearing, make sure to brush and floss before bedtime and in the morning. Avoid giving your child any food or drink after brushing, except water.

Baby Bottle Decay

Sugary liquids such as a bottle of formula, milk, or juice is not recommended due to bacteria clinging on to the teeth and gums causing decay in the tooth. Try giving your child a bottle of water to take to bed instead of the sugary liquids.

Limit Juice Intake

A child can have up to 4oz of 100% fruit juice a day. Having too much juice throughout the day can lead to tooth decay due to the sugary content of the juice clinging on to the teeth.

Control the Sippy Cup and Pacifiers

Long term use of pacifiers can affect the line-up of the teeth and the shape of the mouth. Sippy cups can lead to tooth decay of the front teeth if used all day.

Stand Firm on Brushing and Flossing

Children at times can fuss when it comes time for brushing and flossing. As a parent or guardian make it clear to them that they do not have a choice. Always be patient and let them help you. Have them choose their own toothbrush or toothpaste with their favorite character or something that lights up or sings to them. Kids can start brushing their own teeth at age 6. Any children younger than the age of 6 should get assistance form a grown up.
