Boost Your Immune System

Here at Natural Horizons we believe that a key element of your health is a highly functioning immune system.  It is your first defense against disease, including cancer, toxins, including environmental toxins, viral and bacterial infections, inflammation, and even the aging process.

One of the areas of the immune system that is sometimes overlooked is the "gut" or intestines.  In fact approximately 80% of your immune system lies within your intestinal tract which houses trillions of bacteria. A healthy intestinal tract has a ratio of 85% healthy bacteria and 15% of bad bacteria.  Sadly, due to poor nutrition, over processed foods, and contaminated foods, most people are upside down in this ratio.  For this reason we recommend a diet high in cultured or fermented foods as well as a high quality probiotic supplement. We carry the HMF (Human Micro Flora) line of probiotics from Seroyal. It is a well-researched line of probiotics showing benefits in a wide variety of health conditions. Unlike other probiotics, the HMF line is cultured from human sources, as opposed to soil or animal sources. A general recommendation of 1-2 capsules daily of HMF Forte is appropriate for the average person, but higher doses are often necessary when people have undergone recent antibiotic therapy, are showing signs of dysbiosis (imbalanced gut flora), or have other health challenges they are facing. You may ask why we recommend a probiotic supplement.  Here are a few reasons:

  • Modulate your immune response and reduce inflammation
  • Digest and absorb certain carbohydrates
  • Produce vitamins, absorb minerals, and eliminate toxins
  • Prevent allergic reactions
  • Keep bad bacteria in check especially after taking antibiotics

It is imperative when discussing probiotics that we discuss their connection to antibiotics.  However, when I speak of antibiotics, be aware that 70% of antibiotics used in our country today are not for illness, but for improving growth in animals. Below is a link to an article that explores antibiotics and probiotics more thoroughly. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/09/22/how-to-protect-yourself-from-the-antibiotics-in-your-meat-and-vegetables.aspx
