Fountain Of Youth Found In Recent Research

In the December 2, 2010 issue of Science Daily an article entitled, "Fountain Of Youth In Your Muscles?" caught my attention.  How could it not?  Aren't we all looking for the Fountain Of Youth?  According to this article a recent study that was done at Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine, found that "endurance exercise" like a jog along one of our many trails, or a spin class at your favorite gym is the key to unlocking the stem cells of your muscles. 

Why do they consider this to be the Fountain of Youth?  Because these findings explain for the first time why older people who have exercised throughout their lives age more gracefully. The study has discovered how endurance exercise increases the number of muscle stem cells and enhances the person's ability to rejuvenate old muscles. Muscle function dictates so much of what happens in the body.  It also plays a large roll in what we look like as we age.  You've seen people whose face or skin sags or wrinkles, who develop a double chin...these are, in part at least, effects of poor muscle tone.  The ability to tone those muscles as a person ages is directly related to their ability to rejuvenate the muscle, hence enhancing these stem cell production and activity can be considered a Fountain of Youth. The article goes on to say, "The muscles and skeleton in our bodies work together, explains Prof. Benayahu. 'When we age, we experience sarcopenia, a decline in mass and function of muscles, and osteopenia referrers to bone loss,' she says. As a result, our musculoskeletal system is more susceptible to daily wear and tear, which also explains the increased risk of falling in the elderly. Endurance exercise also improved the levels of "spontaneous locomotion" -- the feeling that tells our bodies to just get up and move . Aging is typically associated with a reduced level of spontaneous locomotion. The combination of aging and a sedentary lifestyle significantly contributes to the development of diseases such as osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, as well as a decline in cognitive abilities. Because these findings could have such a large impact on these diseases, researchers are hopeful they can discover a method of artificially developing these stem cells for those people who have lost motor function.  But for those of us that can still move.....DO IT!  A minimum of 20 minutes a day, every day is so important to our overall health.  Find something you enjoy, rather running, vigorous walking, biking, skating, swimming, spinning, P90X, or whatever and then as Nike has said for years, "Just Do It".  You and your non-aging body will be glad you did.
