Bottled Water vs. Tap Water

You thought it was good for you.  You thought you were doing your body a favor by doing it.  But once again, we were fooled by the marketing companies.  Like many Americans who have been purchasing bottled water rather than drinking tap water you felt it would help in your quest for overall health.  The Environmental Working Group, EWG, has recently published their report findings on the study of 10 major bottled water companies.  You will definitely want to read the report.

"Cancer-causing contaminants in bottled water purchased in 5 states (North Carolina, California, Virginia, Delaware and Maryland) and the District of Columbia substantially exceeded the voluntary standards established by the bottled water industry." Unlike the testing of tap water where it is required by law that the results be available for public review, bottled water companies are not required to disclose the results of any kind of contamination testing they do.  The report states, "To the contrary, our tests strongly indicate that the purity of bottled water cannot be trusted. Given the industry's refusal to make available data to support their claims of superiority, consumer confidence in the purity of bottled water is simply not justified." The EWG only gave three of the ten companies a good rating.

  1. Nestlé's Pure Life Purified Water
  2. Gerber Pure Purified Water
  3. Penta Ultra-Purified Water

When the EWG asked the bottled water companies the following questions most companies refused to give answers.

  • Where does the water come from?
  • Is it purified, and if so, how?
  • Is the water tested, and what, if any, contaminants have been found?

Nestle's was the only company that discloses this information on their label.  As a result of this and other testing done by the organization, they are recommending people use whole house filtering systems for their tap water or at least a filtering system for their drinking water.  You may read the report, it's testing protocol and the results at http://www.ewg.org/reports/BottledWater/Bottled-Water-Quality-Investigation
