Cancer Treatment May Bring Lifestyle Changes

Family Coping with Cancer Like any life-changing event, cancer treatment can dramatically affect your lifestyle. From body changes to changes in how we relate to others, the lifestyle changes during cancer treatment can be significant. If you are a patient, you may experience one or more of the following lifestyle changes:

  • Increase in doctor visits, hospital stays, and medical appointments, resulting in missed time at work, school, and social activities.
  • Self image struggles due to hair loss, weight changes, surgical scars, and other cancer treatment side effects.
  • Decrease in energy due to medication and the constant stress of testing and medical care.
  • Homesickness from being away from your own, comfortable surroundings and the people you love.
  • Having to scale back or abstain from vigorous exercise.
  • Stress from working with insurance and billing companies.

If you are a parent of a cancer patient, you may experience one or more of the following lifestyle changes:

  • Increase in doctor’s visit, hospital stays, and medical appointments, resulting in missing work/school, special events, and outings with friends and family for both you, your child, and your family members.
  • Coordinating and paying for childcare for siblings while attending doctor visits with a sick child.
  • Difficulties meeting the emotional needs of healthy siblings.
  • Increased need to be strong for your entire family after a family member has been diagnosed.
  • Informing and updating friends, family, and schools about your child’s condition.
  • Having to work with insurance companies and billing companies to take care of your child’s treatment payment.

While there will be many lifestyle changes, there are many resources to support you and your family during cancer treatment. Addressing emotional and spiritual issues is a key part of the Natural Horizons cancer treatment program. Our staff will help direct you to resources to help with the financial, emotional and lifestyle challenges associated with cancer care.
