Oral Cancer Awareness - Fairfax Dentistry

March 19, 2017

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

According to the National Cancer Institute, more than 21,000 men and 9,000 women in the United States annually receive oral cancer diagnoses. In 2013, there were 41,380 new cases of cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx in the U.S., resulting in 7,890 deaths, per the NCI.

Oral cancer can be found in the mouth and/or throat- with most of these cancers beginning on the surfaces of the mouth, tongue and lips. Some of the risk factors for oral cancer include, but are not limited to the following: tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, infection with human papillomavirus, sun exposure, diet, betel nut use, and personal history of oral cancer.

Common Symptoms of Oral Cancer - Fairfax Dentistry

Symptoms to watch for include patches inside the mouth or on the lips, a sore on the mouth or lips that doesn't heal, bleeding in the mouth, loose teeth, pain or difficulty swallowing, lump in the neck, numbness of lower lip and chin, difficulty wearing dentures and a persistent earache.

At Natural Horizons, we take your oral health & oral cancer screenings very seriously. In each dental cleaning with our hygienist, Tina Nguyen, towards the end of the appointment our dentist, Dr. Rahul Kumar, DDS, does an oral cancer screening. This is to ensure that no symptoms are being missed and proper care is taken moving forward. If you stay on top of your dental cleanings, these oral cancer screenings are done every 6 months at your routine check-up.
